- Butterfly 3?
- Butterfly 2?
- Butterfly 1?
- Micro
- Satin Beauty?
- Satin Beauty?
Trapped 4th July
I think this is a Satin Beauty. Could someone confirm or otherwise.
Is the micro Phalonidia manniana?
Then there is a real mystery. I think it's a butterfly but I'm at a loss to think which species.

Hi Mike,
Your butterfly is a moth. Have a look at Dingy Shell.
Not sure about your micro, but I think you are right with Satin Beauty.
Mel.

Hi Mel
Thanks - my first thought was Dingy Shell but the colour of the closed wing looked wrong.

Hi Mike,
I think your tortrix may be Aethes rubigana (or maybe cnicana). It's well past it's best but the broader wing and maybe a yellowish colour remaining on the wing, both more like the former? Do you have any burdock nearby?
John

Hi folks,
I love Dingy Shells - though I've never actually seen the upper wings! Yes, they do look like mini butterflies and unlike so many carpets and what have you are identifiable in their typical wings closed pose. Nice catch.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Mike
As John has mentioned this could be either Aethes cnicana or Aethes rubigana.

The Aethes mystery has been resolved, a male rubigana.
