Coleophora limosipennella:

Hi,

Steve Hind asked me to post this here, so here I have!

An adult Coleophora limosipennella has emerged from a 10.5mm long case I found on Elm on 3.July.10 at Styal Woods.

I had previously found a couple of cases there in 2007.

I think these are the only Cheshire records of this species but I'm sure Steve can confirm if this still true.

Worth looking out for. There is a similar species, Coleophora badiipennella, which makes a smaller (6mm) case on Elm.

Hopefully pics of adult (from 18.6.11) and case (from 2007) are attached.

Cheers
Ben Smart

Coleophora limosipennella:

Only separated from C. alnifoliae & milvipennis in 1970, so all the previous records are undetermined. Wilmslow, larvae common 1948-1955 (bred 1952) and occasional at Delamere, Alderley and Macclesfield.

Without wishing to undermine how the adult looks, this is another 'Colly' where the case is nicer to look at than the imago .....

Nice find Ben !
