Polecat or Ferret?

This photograph was taken in a garden in Handbridge, Chester and passed to the 'Friends of the Meadows' group. We think it's a Polecat, but it may be a Ferret?

Can anyone confirm please? Thanks!

DNA is the only way to know if it is really "pure", the only really positive external ID feature of a true Polecat would be if the dark facial mask extended below the mouth - in hybrids it doesn't.

Its nice and dark from the picture and even if it is a hybrid it is a superb garden visitor!
