Return of the Honey Bee:

For several years I saw no Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) in the garden, then only one or two (literally) for the last couple of years. I am therefore pleased to report that over the last week or so my Escallonia has been in full flower and in addition to its usual heavy load of bumblebees (including just a few B. hypnorum which have moved on to this plant since the Aquilegia flowers finished), there have been many Honey Bees in attendance.

A few days ago, the bush was covered in bees, of which I estimated about 20% were Honey Bees. This afternoon with either cooler weather and/or possibly the flowers just starting to go past their best, there are not so many bees, but the majority of those present are Honey Bees.
