Strange columns of flying inverts:

Hello all,

On the way home from Warrington last night I was driving along the M56 (~ 9.00pm) and I happened to notice what at first looked like very dark smoke rising from the verge and on closer inspection (obviously whilst maintaining full control of my vehicle at all times with full care and attention) I could see that they were insects, probably ants?

They were all rising in a sort of a spiral or funnel shape up to about 20 feet all along the verge of the M56, M53 and A483. From a little reading could this be the nuptial flight of Lasius niger?

Not a lot of info to go on I know, but I figured it might be obvious and I have just never seen it before!

Thanks,

Eric
