Corizus hyoscyami on Wirral coast:

I recently found two adults of the strikingly coloured bug Corizus hyoscyami at Heswall Fields cliffs on the Wirral coast (SJ246822). There were two adults on Restharrow (Ononis repens) which was plentiful along the upper shore at the base of the cliffs. According to County Recorder Steve Judd's recently published county true bug checklists, this species hasn't been recorded in Cheshire since before 1906 - a long time to wait!

John,

Thanks for sharing the record. As you know I have been recording the same site. Having seen your images, I went to Shore Cottage dune (SJ235835) and found two more. Full of enthusiasm, I went to Red Rocks but found none.

However, there were some Common Lizards (Lacerta vivipara / Zootoca vivipara) which was nice.

Well done Mike - did you notice the plant species that the bugs were on?
That area of new dune by the cottage is developing into excellent habitat for insects.

They were on Common Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) but not eating; would be surprised if this was a food plant.
