A Biodiversity Information System for Cheshire, Halton, Warrington & Wirral

Hello all, I have been sent the following photos and asked what this species is and whether it is likely to be damaging a nearby tree.

My woeful fungi ID skills make me think it is a fairy ring, Hmm.... however I did say "woeful" ID skills!

I take that back, it is more like an ink cap?! I am going to stop now!

Any help with an id and some info as to any potential damage this species may cause would be very gratefully received.
