Tiny Snail Query:

This snail was found dead. It is tiny, 7mm diameter. Tightly banded, translucent, mottled brown. Any ideas?

A Zonitidae or Oxycilus has been suggested on iSpot.

It would require closer inspection but iSpot are correct, it could be either:

Zonitoides nitidus which is a species of small, air-breathing land snail (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zonitoides_nitidus)

or one of the species of Oxychilus snails (e.g. Oxychilus alliarius - the Garlic Snail) - (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxychilus).

Cheers.

Steve

Thanks Steve. It looks almost exactly like the Zonitoides nitidus but is that good enough? Is it worth getting it to an expert so I can put it on RODIS ? It's sitting in a pot on a desk in the RECORD office at the moment.

Hi Pat,

Definitely worthwhile getting it to an 'expert' to get it properly identified. Try Ian Wallace over at Liverpool Museum.

Cheers.
