Herons on the Dee Weir in Chester

Post by RachelMC »

Herons on the Dee Weir in Chester:

Over the past few years, the sight of an occasional heron standing on the banks of the pool below the weir, or on the weir, by the Old Dee Bridge in Chester has become quite common.

Yesterday evening I was walking over the Old Dee Bridge at 7pm (about 3 hours after High Water) and saw two below the bridge on the weir's edge. Then, a glance over to the Salmon Leap and I counted a further seven!

Nine herons on the weir must be a record?

My wife and I were down by the weir at around half past seven yesterday evening (Easter Sunday 8th April 2012) and we counted no less than eighteen Herons. They were all jostling for the best positions and clearly expecting something. Interesting that they were all facing upstream, as if they knew that a shoal of fish was coming down (heading out to sea).

We saw a couple of the Herons catch what appeared to be small eels, but mostly the birds were just standing there, waiting patiently. We watched them for the best part of an hour before we got too cold to stay any longer.
