Garden Moth Recording Scheme (GMS) 2009

Post by SteveMcBill »

Dear Moth Recorder,

I hope you don't mind me contacting you to promote the Garden Moth Scheme (GMS) as far as we can to moth recorders across the British Isles and thought that you and moth-recorders in your area might be interested in joining in for 2009. The GMS is voluntary run by moth-trappers for moth-trappers.

In case you haven't seen a copy before then please find attached below a link to a copy of our latest newsletter for your interest - maybe you can circulate it further? Maybe you would like to join the Garden Moth Scheme in 2009 starting on March 6th?

What do you need to do to take part? You just need to count the numbers of common moths you see in your moth trap or on your window, for one night every week from March to November (and you are probably doing that already). The list of moths consists of about 200 species, common in your area and those that are difficult to identify are intentionally left out. This means that the GMS is open to recorders of all abilities – you don’t have to be an expert, just get yourself a moth trap and field guide and you will be welcome! (And we can now even help out some recorders that might want a free beginners moth kit of moth trap and field guide - available to the first people to apply)

This is a rapidly expanding garden moth-recording scheme that measures the fortunes of our common moths - over 150 completed the 2008 recording year and we now have 6 years of records from some gardens! And to make it even more attractive to recorders the GMS now has its own popular website, chat-site, regular newsletter, annual report and meeting (15th February 2009 if you want to come along).

So we need your help to get better coverage of common moths across the British Isles. Maybe you can place the attached note or/and newsletter on your website or in a newsletter if you have one?

Get back in touch if you want to find out more about the GMS or want to sign up to start recording in 2009 on March 6th. If you don't fancy joining in yourself then maybe you know of other people who might like to get involved - just tell them to get in touch,

Anyway, thanks for your time, hope you have a great Christmas,

Best wishes

Dave Grundy
