Some micros for ID

Post by bobhelencoan »

Another good night on Monday with barred-yellow, beautiful hook-tip, Ingrailed clay, Short cloaked moth and Variegated golden tortrix among others.
We have 5 we are not sure of.
Eudonia mercurella, Eudonian lacustrata and Scoparia basistrigalis an obviously larger moth than the other two.
Two little brown moths we think are the same species. Perhaps a Bryotropha?
A Cnephasia species
Photos on 5mm square paper for size.
All help and ideas appreciated. Bob & Helen

Hi Bob & Helen
Your Scoparia basistrigalis looks a possibility with the chequered fringe and broad wings. Scoparia basistrigalis has been claimed in Cheshire on a number of occasions but none have ever been confirmed, as far as I know, so if you still have the moth, I'll have a go at dissecting it for you, if you like.
I'd agree with your others. Bryotropha 2 looks OK for terrella.

Thanks Steve. We hadn't realised that Scoparia basistringalis was not a Cheshire moth otherwise we might not have thought of it as a possibility and probably thought it another Scoparia ambigualis! We do have the moth and will keep it for dissection if you think it is worth it.

Hi Bob & Helen
The Scoparia may turn out to be just another ambigualis but it does have the features of Scoparia basistrigalis, so I would welcome the opportunity to take a closer look.

Dissection by Steve Hind has identified the micro as a male Scoparia ambigualis not basistrigatis. Thanks Steve
