Triple-spotted Clay or Double Square Spot?

Post by JohnR »

This particular moth is causing problems. I thought it might be Triple-spotted Clay based on a purplish tinge and the wings held more parallel. Another moth-er named it as Double Square Spot as it is not purple enough. I am totally confused, what is the consensus on this forum please?

Thanks John

Hi John,

It's a Setaceous Hebrew Character. Sorry to disappoint.

Hi John,

These two can be difficult to separate.
Yes the Triple-spotted Clay is usually darker and sometimes with a purple tinge but the way I usually tell them apart is the thorax the Triple-spotted Clay has a pale patch in the centre whereas the Double Square Spot doesn't.
So yours is a Double Square Spot.
Pic of Triple-spotted Clay below for comparison.

Thanks Greg. I will try to use that identification tip in the future.

Cheers, John
