Schreckensteinia festaliella?

Post by mikew »

Confirmation requested, please.
I trapped this worn specimen last night. I tracked the id down to the above. It is described a common but then found it's not annual in the county.

Hiya Mike,

I'm not having a brilliant day on the ID front today - so do seek further advice on this one! But I'm a bit twitchy about Schreckensteinia festaliella. I'm keener on an Elachista - perhaps Elachista altricomella doesn't look too bad? Hants moths has some nice pics. Do you have a side-on picture?

Great picture though, and I'm sure someone will be able to give you a definitive answer.

Cheers, Julian

Hi Julian
Many thanks for your help on this one. The specimen in the fridge was in a poor state but I have taken this side shot so would be pleased to hear if you think this can confirm Elachista atricomella

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the extra photo. I still like this as an Elachista, but the head looks quite pale here, so my best guess would be Elachista canapennella. The white cross band also fits better as it looks uninterrupted, and I prefer the overall shape. These have been found into September in Cheshire. Unfortunately the guidelines require gendet to confirm an ID of canapennella even though others in this group only require a good photo. So unless anyone else can help I would stop there. It is worn!

It may also be more common than Paul's site suggests, as only a fraction of records will be worked through to a confirmed ID.

Any other opinions are very welcome!

Cheers, Julian

Thanks Julian

We'll leave it at that then! E canapennella was confirmed here in June 2018 by Steve's dissection.
