Better Than Expected Night

Post by melbellingham »

An inspection of my trap last night (10/09/2020) before bed produced just 2 LYU, the temperature was cool and so I expected very little this morning.

45 moths of 16 species was therefore better than expected, but it got better.

The first surprise was a Red Underwing (NFY) on the wall adjacent to the trap. Two more NFY in the trap were Large Wainscot and Frosted Orange.

The remainder of the catch included 16 LYU, 10 Lesser YU, Brimstone, Snout, Willow Beauty, Common Marbled Carpet, Square-spot Rustic 2, Set. Heb. Character 2, Silver Y, Vine’s Rustic, Eudonia angustea 3, Blastobasis adustella, Brown House Moth and White-shouldered House Moth.

Hi Mel,

Apart from the stunning Red Underwing and Vine's Rustic our catches were very similar.
Your Wainscot looks to me like a large female Common. It's lacking any grey dusting, arc of black dotted cross line and has rounded wing tips not pointed as in Large Wainscot.

Regards
Greg

Hi Greg,

You are correct of course, it was a Common Wainscot and it was still NFY.

Between 2003 and 2006 it was fairly common here, with regular records, but since then it has been seen less frequently and missing some years.

2003 - I probably recorded it, but was unsure of ID so never sent records in. 2004 - 8 records, 2005 - 6 records, 2006 - 19 (but it was an exceptionally good year), 2007 - 2 records. 2008 - 2, 2009 - 4, 2010 - 4, 2011 - 2, 2012 - 1, 2013 - 3, 2016 - 1, 2018 - 1, 2019 - 2, 2020 - 1 but still time for more.

Thanks Greg,

Mel.
