Spam?

Post by Tim_Ward »

I'm disturbed to find that a post of mine about Pyrausta aurata/purpuralis in 2018 appears to be accessed by lots of people (over 7000 now!) and is getting Spam-like new posts against it. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Hi Tim,

I can remember one post in particular by SteveH, regarding members records and the production of the Moth Report.

See link below:
http://www.record-lrc.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 429#p12107

It attracted someone who advertised report writing services. The reply was deleted eventually, but I have read other posts which seem to have been hijacked also.

I find it annoying and wondered whether these unsuitable replies should also be removed, but I don't know whether this would stop any further 'spam' replies.

Mel.

Hi,
I'm a RECORD volunteer and have Moderator access to the Forum. I regularly (once a week) try to clear out the spammers - many of whom advertise these "essay writing services". I'm going through some now, so hopefully I'll pick them all up (they're usually active over weekends). The Moth Forum is normally free from spammers though.

The 2018 post thread referred to should now be clear of spam (and the spammers banned)!

PS. I can't account for the 7,000+ views, but many posts from around that time got lots of views in the thousands. The "sticky" Announcement post Obtaining Grid Refs the Easy Way from 2014 is almost at 1.7million!
