First Moths of 2021

Post by melbellingham »

The Winter GMS has been unproductive so far this year, which is not surprizing with the recent overnight temperatures, but I did record my first White-shouldered House-moth Endrosis sarcitrella indoors (09/01/2021).

Last night (10/01/2021) with a minimum temperature of 5 deg. C forecast I decided to put a trap out for a few hours, in hope rather than expectation.

I used an MV lamp (1715 hrs – 2230hrs) and had 2 moths. Early in the evening I found Ypsolopha ustella close to the trap, and later found Common Quaker in the trap. This is my earliest ever record of this latter species, although there are several earlier records in Mapmate.

Rather than put the trap away I changed the lamp to a 20W actinic for the rest of the night, but nothing further was recorded.
