Some recent hatchings

Post by bobhelencoan »

Little action with the traps so far this year but a few moths have hatched, sadly far too early for the species.
We found three Mullein larva last year and hoped to breed them through knowing they could take up to five years. Unfortunatley to our suprise two hatched in February and did not survive for long.
A leaf mine from Elm produced a Phyllonorycter schreberella and from a oak leaves with folds have emerged a couple of Caloptilia, probabaly robustella as dissection before has shown that to be our local species. Photos attached.
Hopefully our moths that have hatched from crab apple leaves will enable a positive ID for Phyllonorycter blancardella or hostis to be made. Again these hatching are very early and the moths had already died when I discovered they had hatched. There are several photos of each moth.
Looking forward to warmer weather. Bob & Helen

Hi Bob & Helen
Your Caloptilia does look more like robustella.
I am sure that your first Phyllonorycter is blancardella, although not certain about number two.

Steve
