It has been suggested that this is either Coleophora frischella or C. alcyonipennella but the former does not seem to be searchable on this website. What is the status of C. frischella in Cheshire?

Cheers, John

Hi John, frischella hasn't been recorded in Cheshire yet (and alcyonipennella has only barely been recorded, with single adults in 2018 and 2020).

Cheers
Paul

Hi John

It was not until about 20 years ago that British entomologists realised that Coleophora frischella and C. alcyonipennella were both good species. Prior to which only one species, C. frischella had been recorded in the country. It was then discovered that the illustrations on which the species were being determined had been transposed. The description was for C. alcyonipennella but the illustrations were for C. frischella. As a result it was thought that all British specimens were C. alcyonipennella but C. frischella has since been found in the country.

Older Cheshire records do exist but have had to be aggregated as it is not known which of these two species they were. There are some specimens in Manchester Museum which have yet to be determined.

Regards
Steve
