Micromoth ID

Post by andrewjcharlton »

This distinctive little thing, only 3mm long, was in my garden moth trap. I can't recognize it from any of the images in Sterling and Parsons. Any suggestions for an ID?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Have a look at Bucculatrix nigrocomella. The length is given as 4.5mm., but that is what I think it is.

Sterling and Parsons doesn't have images of every species but I recently bought Manley (3rd edition) which does.

Hi Mel,
thank you. Yes, I'm sure that is correct. I see it mines Oxeye Daisy, of which I have a large patch. It's a new species for me. I'm amazed that after 20 years of garden trapping I'm still picking up new species (this is number 545). Thank you for the tip about using Manley. I hadn't realized it is so comprehensive.
