Identifying Yponomeutidae

Post by Tim_Ward »

Lots of Yponomeutidae in the trap this week. The Bird-cherry Ermine were easy to identify but the others were more of a problem. I had hoped to determine id by dissection, as advised by the book, but looking online there appears to be a lack of photos to aid dissection so I'm resorting to the Forum for help.
I attach a couple of photos. I think that the first of these is may be a Willow Ermine and that the second may be one of the Orchard/Apple/Spindle group. What does the panel think?

With the exception of Bird-cherry Ermine, I record all the ones I trap as Yponomeuta sp. Probably only safe to record the others to species when reared from their foodplants.
