Pretty Chalk Carpet

Post by mikew »

Had only 32 species last night from one trap.
This geometrid was clinging to the inside wall & wouldn't open its wings. Eventually it spread its wings inside a pot so I could confirm the id.
The soil is quite acidic here but my wife has planted a number of clematis over the years. The clematis have produced occasional records of Haworth's Pug.
This is the second county record & the first for over a century.

Regards, Mike

Hi Mike,

Your moth is a Blue-bordered Carpet.
Pretty Chalk Carpets would be a real rarity in Cheshire.
I've only caught them at Llanymynech Rocks.
Pic below for comparison.
