Batrachedra pinicolella/confusella

Post by stevehind »

In the March/April 2022 edition of The Entomologist’s Record and Journal of Variation, there is a paper recognising Batrachedra pinicolella as comprising two distinct species. (Hall & Plant) Ent. Rec. 134:53-57.
There are fifty records of Batrachedra pinicolella in Cheshire, of which eight are known to have been retained. Seven of these have been re-checked and all seven relate to the new species Batrachedra confusella:
1. Marbury Country Park – 9th July 2005
2. Alsager – 12th July 2005
3. Alsager – 5th July 2006
4. Heald Green – 5th July 2006
5. Alsager – 11th July 2014
6. Alsager – 18th July 2016
7. Alsager – 1st July 2017
The eighth record (Delamere 27 Jul 1962, two specimens, H.N.Michaelis) is in Manchester Museum and has yet to be re-checked.
If you come across any Batrachedra pinicolella/confusella it would be worth retaining them to see if Batrachedra pinicolella does actually occur in Cheshire, or do we only have Batrachedra confusella in the county.
