Bedellia somnulentella Mines On Bindweed at Parkgate

Post by SteveMcBill »

Bedellia somnulentella Mines On Bindweed at Parkgate:

Mines of the larvae of the micro-moth Bindweed Bent-wing (Bedellia somnulentella) were found on Bindweed leaves on the top of the marshes at Parkgate, Wirral (SJ28077776) on Friday 30th September 2011.

The mines were the characteristic narrow galleries lined with frass subsequently leading to large translucent yellowish brown blotch mines from which all frass is ejected. There were also 'aerial' network of silk threads constructed under the mines many of which were covered in frass ejected from the mine. See mines below:

Bedellia somnulentella Mines On Bindweed:

This is an irruptive species which is not found every year, the last being a single record in 2008. It appears to be having a good year in 2011, with additional sightings so far from: Tarvin, Delamere, Walker's Green, Haslington, Winterley and Cheadle Hulme.

Thanks for the info. Steve - much appreciated !!

I've been looking for this species for a number of years now - previously without success - so I was VERY pleased to find these mines and in some profusion too.

Cheers.

Steve
