2011 - A Record Year

Post by SteveH »

2011 - A Record Year:

With single Red Chestnut (Cerastis rubricosa), Brick (Agrochola circellaris)and Feathered Thorn (Colotois pennaria) amongst a few other moths last night (Tuesday 25th October 2011), the total number of species recorded in our Elton garden this year rose to 354, besting the 2006 figure of 352. If anything this year is the more impressive tally, since there have been scarce few migrants about - something which 2006 had in abundance. This best ever is in addition to the best ever year for micros, with 156 now - beating the previous best of 150, also set in 2006. The only aspect that is down, is our average catch per light session - this year it stands at 81, last year it was 108 and in 2006 it was 115. However, none of these come close to the all-time high of 217 set back in 1996.
