Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner Damage?:

Hello all,

Just noticed this Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) tree in Chester Zoo. I have not noticed the damage before, poor observation skills I guess !!

Is it damage from the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner Cameraria ohridella or is it difficult to tell from just these mines?

Thanks,

Eric

Yes Eric, those are the mines.

There are still no records for this species from SJ29, the North Wirral coast around Meols, Moreton, Leasowe, Wallasey, so if anyone visits this area have a look for it.

Steve

Hi Steve, many thanks for this.

I will certainly keep an eye out for it when out and about. I have mentioned it to some of our volunteers who visit the north of the Wirral regularly so hopefully they can fill that square.

Thanks again,

Eric

Hi Eric,

As Steve has already mentioned above - your pictures definitely show the mines of Cameraria ohridella.

Is it the tree near the back-gate (just by the wallabies/kangaroos (whichever is in the pen now)) ?? If so, the mines (and obviously the moth) have been there since before I left rECOrd.

Cheers.

Thanks Steve, there was no need to point out how bad my powers of observation are! :D

It is that tree and I don't know why I have never noticed it before!

I guess I am so used to walking that route that I don't appreciate what I have around me!

Poor show!

Hi Folks,

I passed by some of my worst affected trees over the weekend, and saw scores of the adults 'dancing' around the leaves.

Cheers,
Steve
