Hoverfly - Volucella inanis:

Whilst leading a Bumblebee and Bugs walk at Runcorn Hill LNR on the 20th August 2011, one of our party (David Watmore) potted a large hoverfly off Common Ragwort. I retained the specimen realising I had not seen it previously in Cheshire. I suspected it was a Volucella sp. and my thoughts initially considered V.zonaria, however on consulting Stubbs and web resources it was obviously a closely related species Volucella inanis. Following consultation with the County Recorder I can confirm this as the first known record for Cheshire. The finder suggested that there was more than one specimen present on the ragwort.
