Wildlife Exchange Session: 12 July 2019 Discovering Orchids

Post by RachelMC »

Wildlife Exchange Session: Friday 12th July 2019
Discovering Orchids
From common to rare, easy to impossible…and a few Ghost stories too!

For our July Wildlife Exchange Session we will be joined by Sean Cole who will tell us how he got into orchids, and why they fascinate him. He’ll tell us about some of his orchid adventures, describe some local species and places to see them.

Sean Cole is co-author of a new field guide to British Orchids. He has been fascinated by orchids since 1999, when he first set out to see all the British species, and quickly became obsessed by them. His main interests are in identification, taxonomy and pollination. He has a particular fascination with Ghost orchid, the only species he is yet to see in the UK, and he wrote a paper for the New Journal of Botany in 2014 on the status of that species in Britain. Details of how to order his new book will be available at the talk, though it won’t have been published. Sean has promised to bring amazing orchid pin badges and baseball caps too.

This exchange session will be followed by field visit on Saturday 13th July (see below)

Discovering Orchids Field Visit
Saturday 13th July, 10am-4pm, Alyn Waters Country Park

Following our talk on Friday 12th July, Sean Cole will lead a field visit looking at identification challenges in two particularly difficult genera: Epipactis and Dactylorhiza.

Meet at Alyn Waters Country Park at 10am. Bring hand lens, knee pads/mat and packed lunch. We will visit another site later in the day so transport is required, though I am sure car share will be possible.

Places are limited so please book a place if you intend to come.
