Chinese Mitten Crab in the River Mersey:
Hi all,
just a quick post for information - I've also uploaded the record onto RODIS.
An angler contacted the EA's Fisheries Team about catching a crab in Warrington. The Fisheries Officer collected the specimen and brought it back to the office/lab for further identification. We have verified that it is a Chinese Mitten Crab (CMC) (Eriocheir sinensis).
This is the first EA record of CMC in the river Mersey. We have had anecdotal records, but no one has ever kept a voucher specimen or have taken good photos.
Species: Eriocheir sinensis - Chinese Mitten Crab
Sex: Male
NGR: SJ 62981 88218 (This is 2.8km upstream of the tidal limit ((which is Howley
Weir), so we are in the freshwater section).
Recorders: Ian Wood and Paul Breslin (Environment Agency)
Date observed: 21/07/2009
Images: [I have good images, but I'm not sure how to upload them on the forum].
Further information:

http://www.marlin.ac.uk/speciesinformat ... iesID=3283
I've also reported the record to MarLIN.
Cheers,
Paul.
