Dung beetle

Post by bankst »

I found this beetle in my house at the weekend. It's a 'scarab' or dung beetle - in my kitchen. I get enough comments on my cooking already.
Approx. 6mm long, I think it's an Aphodius sp., but which one? Apparently the length of the eighth stria, low down on the sides of the elytra is diagnostic. Pity I only found that out after I'd photographed it from above and released it.
Any dung beetle experts out there?
Cheers,
Tom.

Nah, don't worry, they use the dung to heat their eggs (the decomposition generates heat) but don't eat it, don't take it as an insult to your cooking skills  do you have another picture of it, or is it the only one?

Hi Oli,
Sorry for the slow reply, just recovering from food poisoning. (Joking).
I do have a couple more pics but sadly much the same as the first one, shot from directly above. I'm inclined to go for A. prodromus in the absence of any other suggestions.
Cheers,
Tom.
