Post by Kevin »

Is this a Tansy Plume.
Trapped in my Handbridge Garden, with no Tansy's around.

Hi Kevin,

I had a similar plume to this yesterday and looked up the differences between Tansy Plume and Yarrow Plume (these are the two confusion species here I think). A photo of my moth is attached (also photo'd on an old leaf, as this provides minimal contrast to help see the pattern in the wings!).

I think both our plumes may be Yarrow Plume. Tansy and Yarrow Plumes apparently differ in the colour of their hind legs between the spurs. The section of leg shown with a red bar on my photo is a uniform colour in Yarrow, but is striped (one dark section, one light section) in Tansy. Yours looks uniform to me too.

There's a picture of a worn Tansy Plume on the forum here https://www.record-lrc.co.uk/forum/view ... ume#p11265.

I have no previous experience with either of these moths, so we might want to take further advice as Tansy Plume is quite a rare moth in Cheshire.

Thanks, Julian
