Collembola (Springtail) Key

There are many groups of invertebrates which are under-recorded, badly under-recorded, or not recorded at all in the Cheshire region. Any recording work at all in any of these groups would be worthwhile and this has recently been shown by our County Macro Moth Recorder (Shane Farrell) who, through his digital photography, got involved in Collembola (Springtails). The excellent photographs he took of these tiny animals were posted on Flickr and were identified by an international specialist in the order - Frans Janssens.

By working together they have produced the first draft of a "Key to common surface dwelling species of Collembola from the UK". This key has photographs of the species involved and should enable any interested naturalist to make a start on this intriguing group.

The key (in its current 1st draft form) is available as a PDF file from the link below.

Cheers

Steve :)
