Tegenaria gigantea:

When taking my dad's old shed down on Saturday (15/09/2012) I saw the biggest Tegenaria ever. It was about 4 inches leg spread, but sadly I had no camera with me. I worked it out because the wood on the shed is T&G 4inch and it was as wide as that. Do we get Tegenaria gigantea now in Widens

There are two species of Tegenaria which are very similar in size and appearance - T.gigantea and T.saeva. These species can only be separated by microscopical examination and even then it's not easy to distinguish between them. To complicate matters further there has also been hybridisation between them.
Cheshire records I have show both species with some records of T.saeva in Widnes.
